ELK GROVE, CA - The (12) St. Francis Troubadours upset the (5) Monterey Trail Mustangs 61-50 to open the Sac-Joaquin Division I Section Playoffs on Tuesday night.

Monterey Trail lost their first game after rattling off five straight games. Mustangs head coach Louie Corpuz, in his first season turned around the girls basketball program and led the team to a 22-6 overall record that will end in a first round playoff exit.

Up next for St. Francis, they earn the right to face the (4) Kennedy Cougars on Thursday. The Cougars narrowly defeated (13) Napa 51-49 on Tuesday.

Four Sacramento area hospitals and care providers have joined forces to protect student athletes.  This collaboration was announced today at an event at John F. Kennedy High School.

The Sacramento Valley Concussion Care Consortium, consisting of Kaiser Permanente, Mercy Neurological
...more Institute, Sutter Health and UC Davis Health System and Wells Fargo's Student Insurance Divison, aims to improve identification and management of sports related concussions. 

Its goal is to provide student athletes with increased access to local medical professionals trained in this area.

The Play It Safe program works with health care providers, schools and families to promote awareness and education on concussion care management.  Partnering with teams and  coaches, the program mission is to protect the health and financial well-being of young athletes and their families.

SACRAMENTO COUNTY, CA - Red light cameras made millions of dollars for the state of California last year. Critics say those cameras are often inaccurate. Law enforcement says the cameras help save lives.

SACRAMENTO, CA - A bullet grazed the head of a 16-year-old boy as he and his friend were playing around with a gun around 10 a.m. Monday, say Sacramento police.

The injured youth was taken to an area hospital by his family. He suffered a very minor injury, Officer Laura Peck

The other 16 year old was arrested for the negligent discharge of a firearm.

Police did not know if parents were home at the time. The incident took place on the 100 block of Fairbanks Avenue. Hospital personnel informed police.

SACRAMENTO, CA - The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Sac-Joaquin Section released the boys basketball playoff brackets on Sunday, where there was some new blood topping each Division.
