SACRAMENTO, CA - There are four weeks left of winter, but the spring-like temperatures have people noticing more mosquitos than in years past.

Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District officials say a year ago there were actually more mosquitos in the Sacramento area, but
...more because of the warmer, dryer weather people are spending more time outside this year and noticing the mosquitos.

Crews will be doing additional mosquito trapping, including Elk Grover and Wilton, which were hot spots for West Nile Virus last year.

According to Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District, the first bird of 2012, testing positive for West Nile virus, has been found, which is not unusual considering this winter's dry and warm weather.

The mosquito species that is out in the Sacramento area right now is typically a day-biter and likes to go inside, so keep windows and doors shut.

THRIFTING HOW-TO
SECONDHAND GLAM.
I seem to have a knack for this whole secondhand wardrobe thing, and can usually do an outfit for under $20. But dressing up for a fancy event just inherently costs more, right?

I was asked to be a part of the Hearts for the Arts charity event
...more that happened a few weeks ago, and was determined to #1: have something new & glam to wear, and #2: still not spend more than $20.
When it was all said & done, I walked out of Thrift Town with
a whole new (secondhand) outfit for under $17.
The faux fur had black satin ribbons on each end,
so I crossed it at the waist and tied the ribbons in the back.
The  layered vintage necklace was perfect for the retro look.
A dash of red lipstick, and I was ready to go!
This outfit total: $16.96
Perfect little black dress: $2.99
Faux fur: $3.99
Vintage necklace: $1.99
Gold/Creme heels: $7.99

SACRAMENTO, CA - A Sacramento mother accused of burning her baby to death in a microwave will face a jury trial.

Ka Yang, 30, was arrested in the March 2011 death of 2-month-old Mirabelle Thao-Lo.

During the Tuesday hearing in Sacramento County Superior Court, Dr. Gregory
...more Reiber, a forensic pathologist with the Sacramento County Coroner's Office, testified that the child's death was caused by second, third and fourth-degree thermal (burn) injuries.

Police said Yang tortured the child when she placed the infant in the microwave.  Yang was arrested three months after the investigation in her daughter's death.

"I believe, given the state of the law, that there is no evidence really to support that this killing occurred for purposes of inflicting pain," said defense attorney Linda Parisi.

"It's a difficult argument to make because all killing involves pain. When someone dies it is a painful experience regardless of how it happens. So,

SACRAMENTO, CA - Copper wire thefts continue to plague the greater Sacramento area and bug News10 viewers. One viewer, Daniel Grey, got in touch with News10's Kate Larsen when his neighborhood was left in the dark for months after thieves ripped out wire from street lamps in his North
...more Sacramento neighborhood.

"I do have a home alarm, surveillance, a fence, I had dogs," says Grey who also recently installed an outdoor security lamp over his garage to brighten up his dark corner at Grand Avenue and Schutt Way. Grey says his neighborhood is dangerous and is concerned the street lamp outage will contribute to crime. "There's quite a bit of crime, these houses have been broken into," says Grey who adds "this is really bugging me."

Grey says his street lamps went out in November and since then he has called and emailed the City of Sacramento on multiple occasions but to no avail. Linda Tucker, with the City of Sacramento's Department of Transportation, says crews are

Great Hang Up- The popularity of safe-driving cell phone apps is soaring.  Finding one that works for you depends how much you want to spend and what you want it to do. Some are free, some stop texts, and others stop calls or even read emails aloud.

A viewer wondered which app would
...more work best for a teen driver so we decided to investigate several apps, both free and pricey.

If you want to monitor behavior behind the wheel, State Farm's "On the Move" sends a driving report, complete with speeds, to parents each time a child drives.

Text Zapper's free app blocks all texting on a phone once a vehicle exceeds five miles per hour.

Drive Safe.ly 's basic plan is free and similar to one backed by pop star Justin Bieber called Drive Safe. The Drive Safe.ly app can read about to 500 words aloud for texts and emails.

The generally well-reviewed iZup stops texts but does allow a few calls to come through. It can also send an "I'm driving"
