ROSEVILLE, CA - Dry Creek Elementary School in Roseville was placed on lockdown Wednesday when two suspected car thieves fled from police into the school parking lot.

Sergeant Cal Walsted of the Roseville Police Department said an undercover officer was in the area of the Saber City
...more mobile home park investigating a report of a stolen vehicle when he was confronted by two men, one of whom had a gun. The plain-clothed officer identified himself and the two men fled in a car, said Walsted.

A brief vehicle pursuit ensued into the Dry Creek elementary parking lot and the school was placed on lockdown for about 20 minutes.  The individuals were eventually apprehended when their car stopped, Walsted said.

The driver of the vehicle was arrested and charged with misdemeanor brandishing of a weapon and reckless driving.

The passenger was released without charges.

ROSEVILLE, CA - Christopher Jon Michael Northam, 25, of Roseville was arrested Wednesday morning on a warrant charging him with his father's murder in May 2011, according to Roseville police.

Northam's ex-wife Averil Elizabeth Easly, 34, of Roseville was also arrested on a Placer
...more County Superior Court warrant charging her as an accessory after the fact, said Roseville police spokeswoman Dee Dee Gunther.

Northam's father, Christopher Dale Northam, 44, was found shot to death on May 20, 2011 by Roseville police officers responding to a call of shots fired inside the Skim X indoor sports building at 8292 Industrial Ave.

Following a comprehensive eight-month investigation that included examination of financial records, interviewing witnesses and eliminating other suspects, detectives found Northam had killed his father for financial gain, said Gunther.

PLACER COUNTY, CA - Placer County sheriff's investigators want to identify the woman shown in surveillance camera photos from a local business for allegedly passing counterfeit $100 bills.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Dena Erwin said the fake bills have been used in different businesses.
...more When store clerks hold the $100 bill up to a light source to check for watermarks and a stripe indicating authenticity, they're seen on the front of the currency. However, the markings show up as printed on the back of the bill when in real money they're embedded.

Anyone who can identify the woman was asked to contact Det. Jim Hudson at (530) 889-7855. Anyone wishing to report information but remain anonymous and be eligible for a cash reward was urged to call Placer County Crime Stoppers at 1 (800)923-8191 or go to the crime stoppers website.

SACRAMENTO, CA - The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Sac-Joaquin Section released the postseason schedule and bracket for Girls basketball - where the defending state champion St. Mary's Rams of Stockton are going for their fifth straight Section title.

ROSEVILLE, CA - The eleventh annual Wild Bill's Tattoo-a-Thon was held in Roseville on Saturday from 8 a.m. to midnight with 100 percent of the day's proceeds going to the UC Davis Children's Hospital.

30 tattoo artists volunteered to work 16 hours straight with all of their
...more proceeds, including tips, benefiting the hospital.

According to Wild Bill's owner, Bill Hill, last year's event raised more than $15,000, with artists tattooing and piercing more than 100 people for charity.

To date, the event has raised approximately $125,000 for the Children's Hospital.

In recognition of the shop's efforts, the hospital named part of the new pediatric intensive care unit after Wild Bill's.

The two top contenders for this year's Academy Awards

They are the top competitors at this year’s Academy Awards, HUGO with 11 nominations, THE ARTIST with 10.  They are both about the early days of movies, but differ greatly in style, technique
...more and cinema imagery.  THE ARTIST is a movie by a French film director about early Hollywood filmmaking, HUGO is a movie by a Hollywood director about early French filmmaking.
For THE ARTIST director Michel Hazanavicius adopts the style of the time in which his story is set.  His movie takes place at the very end of the silent era and it, too, is silent and black and white, even recreating certain silent film style staging.  It is a fictitious story, repeating a favorite Hollywood theme over the years of the famous star on the way out and the young newcomer on the way up (see: A STAR IS BORN and WHAT PRICE HOLLYWOOD).  But THE ARTIST is also a celebration of the early days of Hollywood
