STOCKTON, CA - Two women from the Central Valley are watching the search for human remains east of Stockton very closely.  Both of them have daughters who've been missing for years.

Susan Bender of Modesto was just 15 when she disappeared in 1986.  Although a family acquaintance was
...more long suspected, he was never charged, and now Susan's mom Patricia Chupco can't help but wonder.

"I've been keeping tabs on letters that Shermantine's been writing.  He said from '84 to '86, there are people from Modesto buried out there," said Chupco.

After more than 10 years on death row for four murders, Wes Shermantine is finally offering information about where victims can be found.

Two sets of remains were found a week and a half ago in Calaveras County.  Those remains have been tentatively identified as Cyndi Vanderheiden and Chevelle Wheeler.  Near Linden in San Joaquin County, about a thousand bones and bone fragments have been uncovered.

OAKDALE, CA - A Riverbank city councilman was arrested at 1:06 a.m. Monday on charges of felony DUI and child endangerment after allegedly causing an accident at Highway 108 and Mann Avenue.

While enroute to the crash, Oakdale police received information that one of the involved
...more drivers was attempting to flee the scene, said Sgt. Mike Nixon with the Oakdale Police Department.

According to Nixon, arriving officers discovered a person holding down the man who had attempted to flee the scene. Officers took control of the man and noted he smelled of alcohol, could not stand on his own, and had noticeably slurred speech, said Nixon.

The man was identified from his driver's license as Riverbank city councilman Jesse James White, 23.

A witness identified White as the driver of the vehicle that caused the accident, Nixon said. Witnesses also reported a small child was taken from the front passenger seat of White's vehicle with minor injuries.

EMPIRE, CA - A run-down market outside Modesto rang up more than $2 million in food stamp sales by illegally offering cash back to customers, fraud investigators claim.

According to a civil complaint filed on behalf of the U.S. Secret Service, the Santa Fe Dollar Discount Store sold
...more non-food items to food stamp customers while overcharging their Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards and taking a large cut of the cash proceeds.

Food stamp redemptions totalled $2.1 million between 2009 and the first quarter of 2011, the complaint said.

The Secret Service said fraud detection software put the store in the government's crosshairs, which led to an undercover agent conducting multiple EBT cash transactions totalling hundreds of dollars.

The complaint claims the store's owner, Mark Powell, would typically take a $50 fee for providing a food stamp customer with $100 in cash.

A woman who lives next door to the market said it was obvious
