Originally grown around Malaysia, bananas made their way to India and eventually to the West, but it was not until 1876 that Americans first tasted the banana. They were served in Pennsylvania at a celebration of the hundredth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. And we’ve been
...more finding innovative ways to eat and serve them ever since!

Luckily, bananas are available year round. Although they may be green or greenish yellow in the store, they are ripe when they are fully yellow. Never ripen in the refrigerator, only at room temperature. If not using right away once they are ripe, you can store in the refrigerator, but know that even though the skin will turn black, the flesh of the banana is fine underneath. Another option is to peel and freeze until ready to use.

Look for Whole Trade bananas, available only in Whole Foods Market® stores. Our Whole Trade® Guarantee ensures fair prices are paid for products, better wages and working conditions and sound

Spring has sprung and summer is just around the corner, which can only mean one thing: its wedding season. I am not sure when it happened, but I seemed to have reached a stage in my life where most of my friends are either in long-term relationships awaiting
...more engagement, are engaged or are already married. And even if they are single, they are planning a grand wedding via Pinterest. As I am sure most twenty- and thirty-something-year-olds can attest, it is common to attend so many weddings it feels like you’ve memorized the inventory at Crate and Barrel and you’ve racked up enough hotel points to stay at the Ritz.....

Great Hang Up: Loomis: The parents of a Del Oro High School student killed in a car accident in Loomis started a foundation in her honor to give teen drivers experience behind the wheel they think may have saved her life.

Eileen Bellotti says the Stephanie Bellotti Foundation gives
...more grants to drivers for the NASA Car Control Clinic. The next clinic is this summer at Thunderhill raceway July 31st.

Last month the foundation covered the $99 cost for 20 students from Placer County for a clinic in Granite Bay.

There is also a memorial area including a tree, bench and plaque for Stephanie and her fellow classmate killed in the 2002 wreck where Stephanie's car went off the roadway and both were killed.

Eileen says helping others makes her and her husband feel they are doing something and it also honors the memory of their only child.

YUBA CITY, CA - A battle is brewing in Yuba City over a holy statue from a Hindu temple. The religious icon was found outside by the dumpsters.

"I started shaking. I didn't know what to do. It's our religion being tossed away," said Himant Pandit, a worshipper.

Pandit said
...more he was devastated that an important religious icon representing Shiva, the creator and destroyer of humanity, was found outside the Sri Narayan Hindu Temple wrapped in a black trashbag. He said he got permission from the temple caretaker and temple founder to take it home for safekeeping.

Meanwhile, the temple caretaker said she put the statue outside by the rosebushes---temporarily--- to clear out the smell and the bugs. She said the icon was a magnet for bugs. Worshipers would make offerings and rub yogurt and honey on the icon and not wash it off with water.

"I said we had a big problem. It was worms," said Sushil Bhopal, the temple caretaker. "Sometimes, flies, and

It's been almost two months since we pulled Jack out of school, and I have to say he's a very different boy. We've weaned him off two of his medications (what kind of statement is it that you have to medicate a kid to cope with school?), and his appetite has returned to the point that we can't keep him filled up.

It's been almost two months since we pulled Jack out of school, and I have to say he's a very different boy. We've weaned him off two of his medications (what kind of statement is it that you have to medicate a kid to cope with school?), and his appetite has returned to the point that we can't
...more keep him filled up. This is a new experience for me, cause he was always the kid I had to remember to feed. When my friends complained that their kids were always hungry, I'd look at mine and say, "Oh yeah. Haven't offered food in a while. Maybe he should eat."

We've spent the last few weeks decompressing. He sleeps as late as he needs to in the morning (still up before me most mornings), he eats when he's hungry (which is most of the time) and pretty much does what he wants. Yes, he's playing a lot of video games and spending more time on the computer, but everything is learning. His video games have provoked an interest in learning about World War II, so we've watched some shows
