DAVIS, CA - It started as an idea for a Davis family of six, that quickly developed a life of its own.

The Dunnings took a vow to stop spending money, not a single dime, for the month of February.

Mom Shelley Dunning decided to go all the way with the experiment, So on Jan.
...more 31, they went shopping for a lot of groceries.

Shelley said the family will be eating a lot of beans, rice and frozen meat. The only thing the family plans to spend money on is fresh milk for the kids.

The Dunnings are also walking everywhere instead of driving. Both Bob and Shelley work from home, which helps will make things easier.

The family put all miscellaneous spending on hold.

A few days into the month and the kids are thinking about stuff they don't really need.

Maeve Dunning made a wallet out of duct tape and his sister made a necklace using arts and crafts.

However, not everyone is on board.

SACRAMENTO - Investigators say a man shot and killed by a Sacramento County sheriff's deputy during an early morning search for a car thief had nothing to do with the crime.

Lamont Harmon, 47, was shot when he reached into his waistband after the deputy tried to stop him, said

Peck said the deputy spotted Harmon walking across the Kmart parking lot at 5100 Stockton Boulevard at 3:20 a.m. Monday shortly after a stolen car was discovered in the parking lot of an AM/PM gas station a block away.

Peck said Harmon fled when confronted by the deputy, and the deputy's taser failed to stop him. 

She said the deputy fired his handgun because he thought Harmon was reaching for a weapon.

Peck said Harmon was wearing a heavy coat that may have rendered the taser ineffective, and she confirmed investigators later determined Harmon had no connection to the stolen car.

SACRAMENTO, CA - Cesar Chavez Memorial Plaza is undergoing a major makeover.

Crews closed off portions of the park Monday while they add raised planters, extend walkways and update landscaping.

This is phase one of a three part plan to renovate and update the park. The

Construction is expected to be done in May.

WOODLAND, CA - Four people were arrested after a homeowner walked in on the suspects trying to rob his home Monday afternoon.

The suspects broke into the home on the 1600 block of Truckee Way around 3:45 p.m., thinking no one was home at the time, Woodland Police Sgt. Victoria Danzl

The homeowner got into a struggle with one of the suspects, Angela Zuniga, 37, of Woodland, while the other three fled the scene.

Danzl said when police arrived at the scene, they saw the suspects running from the area.

Zuniga, who suffered non-life threatening injuries during the fight, provided information about the whereabouts of the other suspects, Danzl said.

Woodland police arrested Arthur Tunstall, 43, of Woodland, Esteban Torres, 21, of Woodland, while they were driving a stolen vehicle, and Jason Peck, 45, of Woodland was arrested at his home.

The suspects were booked into Yolo County Jail for vehicle theft, burglary and conspiracy,

GOLD RIVER, CA - Three people were killed in a crash on the westbound side of Highway 50 near Folsom Boulevard at 12:41 a.m. Monday.

Officer Jim Young of California Highway Patrol said 41-year-old Christopher Rigsby of Redwood City may have entered Highway 50 near Sunrise Boulevard
...more or Zinfandel Drive. Rigsby was driving in the wrong direction  when he hit a 2001 Pontiac Aztek heading westbound in the same lane at 60 mph.

The Aztek overturned in the collision and came to a rest on its roof.

According to Young, five people were in the Aztek, including the driver Gustavo Sandoval-Gonzalez, 31, of Sacramento, two women and two other men.

Sandoval-Gonzalez suffered pain in his hand and knees due to the collision. As of Monday afternoon, he was in critical condition at UC Davis Medical Center.

The two women, 52 and 56, were ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. It was undetermined whether or not they were wearing seatbelts,
